AMS keeps pace with strawberry demand

04/Jul/2007

A look at how, despite bad weather this season AMS has managed to keep up with demand.

AMS keeps pace with strawberry demand

The gap between the end of the first UK strawberry crop and the start of the second crop has become more significant than usual as a result of bad weather this season, according to Jayson Clark, marketing manager for AMS and Wellpict European, but he told freshinfo that production has so far kept up with demand.

“The recent poor weather and continual rain has really slowed up production in all strawberry growing areas around the UK and Europe,” Clark told FPJ. “This poor weather has further confounded supply problems as the everbearer varieties are not yet producing.

“Our sales in the last few weeks have eclipsed our previous record, and we were concerned about availability. Fortunately, our UK production has kept pace with these high sales.

“Our investments in poly-tunnels has protected our crops and we have not lost any production. Furthermore, we have maximized acreage on our existing farms with more plantings than ever before. This, together with a couple of new farms that we have bought, has ensured that we have not yet gone short of UK production.”

The supplier intends to import US fruit from Wellpict Inc., its sister company in California, for a two-week period before the everbearer crop is due to online in the second week of July.
